Understanding the Science Behind the Discovery
The study looked at the bacteria in the uterus of women aged 20 to 45 and discovered that older women had lower levels of helpful Lactobacillus bacteria, especially L. gasseri and L. crispatus. When these bacteria were increased, Uterine lining function improved, leading to higher chances of pregnancy with IVF treatment. Researchers also found that a sugar molecule produced by L. gasseri, called LG-EPS, played a key role. When scientists tested LG-EPS on aged mice and human cells, they saw fewer signs of aging in the uterus and better support for embryo attachment. This suggests that products made from bacteria, called postbiotics, could someday help improve fertility in older women.
