    Postbiotic May Help Preserve Fertility in Aging Uterus

    Potential New Approach to Fertility Preservation

    Recent research suggests that strengthening certain bacteria in the uterus could help women keep their ability to conceive as they age. This bacterial group, called Lactobacillus, is usually found naturally in the uterus and is linked to a healthy reproductive system. Scientists found that when they gave aged mice and human uterine cells a specific Lactobacillus species, the lining of the uterus showed fewer signs of aging. This improvement may make it easier for an embryo to attach and grow. Although promising, experts warn that these findings are still early and need more testing before they can be used in humans.

    Understanding the Science Behind the Discovery

    The study looked at the bacteria in the uterus of women aged 20 to 45 and discovered that older women had lower levels of helpful Lactobacillus bacteria, especially L. gasseri and L. crispatus. When these bacteria were increased, Uterine lining function improved, leading to higher chances of pregnancy with IVF treatment. Researchers also found that a sugar molecule produced by L. gasseri, called LG-EPS, played a key role. When scientists tested LG-EPS on aged mice and human cells, they saw fewer signs of aging in the uterus and better support for embryo attachment. This suggests that products made from bacteria, called postbiotics, could someday help improve fertility in older women.

    Outlook for Everyday Life and Future Treatments

    While these results are exciting, scientists emphasize that more research is needed. Still, the idea of using bacteria-based treatments might lead to new ways to support fertility. For example, a safe, lab-made product could be used alongside IVF to create a healthier environment for pregnancy. However, experts also caution against trying over-the-counter probiotics or supplements without medical advice. The uterus is a sensitive ecosystem, and changing its bacteria composition could have unintended effects. As science advances, many hope these discoveries will lead to better options for women facing age-related fertility challenges.
