    Fast Facts

    1. The author explores AI assistants like Claude Cowork and Instinct, highlighting their potential yet limited capabilities outside basic chatbot interactions.
    2. Instinct, an invite-only AI connecting to email, calendar, and messaging via iMessage/WhatsApp, is rapidly gaining popularity and high valuation.
    3. Meta’s AI assistant Muse is also booming in downloads despite security flaws, raising questions about trust and privacy.
    4. The article emphasizes that effective AI agents should integrate seamlessly into daily life without overloading users, unlike less considerate competitors.

The Rise of Practical AI Agents

Recently, I explored AI tools that aim to make life easier. After leaving my full-time job at WIRED, I tested several options. I started with Claude Cowork, giving it access to my email and calendar. At first, I expected a super-smart assistant, but it acted like a basic chatbot with extra features. Still, I wondered what more it could do. Then, I discovered Instinct, an invite-only AI agent. It connects to your messaging apps, email, and calendar. This makes it feel more natural and useful. Instinct uses familiar platforms like iMessage and WhatsApp, so it’s easy to adopt. Essentially, it acts as a personal helper that fits into everyday communication. Its simple form factor could help more people benefit from AI without overwhelming them.

    Functionality and Potential Benefits

Instinct is gaining attention due to its smooth integration and smart design. Unlike complex AI or voice assistants, it doesn’t require learning new software. Instead, it interacts where people already communicate daily. It can handle tasks like going through emails, updating your calendar, or managing messages. This automation saves time and reduces stress. For example, it can unsubscribe you from unwanted emails or organize meetings. Meanwhile, big companies like Meta are rolling out their own AI assistants, showing the industry’s interest. Although there are security concerns—like the recent Hot Yoga São Paulo emails—these tools could transform how we handle daily chores. If they can perform reliably, more users may embrace them for practical purposes, not just tech experiments.

    Adoption: Opportunities and Challenges

Many people are excited about AI agents, but hesitations remain. Some use AI for work, while others keep their distance. The key lies in how well these agents meet real needs. When AI fits seamlessly into existing habits, like messaging apps, it feels less invasive. However, there’s a risk: if AI requires too much input or behaves unexpectedly, users might delete it quickly. For instance, I tried a competing agent that frequently disrupted my meetings, so I stopped using it. On the other hand, Instinct’s straightforward approach makes it appealing. Still, widespread adoption depends on trust and security. If developers can keep these tools safe and useful, AI agents could become valuable assistants for many, not just early adopters.
