    Inside Samsung’s Massive Semiconductor Hub

    Essential Insights

    1. Safety is central: Choi Hye-rin checks equipment, chemicals, and crews as Samsung’s Pyeongtaek fab construction continues.
    2. The site is immense and busy: Hundreds of workers build amid cranes, heavy machinery, and prominent safety reminders.
    3. Samsung is racing to catch up: The expansion aims to reclaim ground in memory chips as AI demand surges and SK Hynix gains share.
    4. The construction boom keeps workers coming back: Despite heat and crowded work zones, Hye-rin says the pay is better and expects steady work.

A city of cranes and shuttle buses

At Samsung’s Pyeongtaek semiconductor hub, construction starts before sunrise. Shuttle buses bring workers from nearby Songtan, where crews build cable ducts and inspect equipment. Safety officers check tools and chemicals, while spotters guide heavy machinery.

The site’s safety messages stand out. Banners urge workers not to rush, even when schedules slip. A scoreboard celebrates safety poems, and helmets carry pledges to stop work when conditions turn unsafe. These reminders matter amid heat, crowded work zones and constant construction.

    Building for an AI-driven market

Samsung expects memory-chip demand to keep rising through 2028. The company also wants to regain ground in high-bandwidth memory, a key component in AI accelerators. SK Hynix has moved ahead in that market, while TSMC leads the business of manufacturing chips designed by other companies.

The Pyeongtaek expansion gives Samsung more capacity to pursue that goal. Still, new facilities alone cannot guarantee a market lead. Samsung must turn its investment into chips that meet customer needs and compete on performance.

    Growth has a human cost—and a draw

The work can be punishing, yet some workers see a reason to stay. One safety officer earns 140,000 won, or about $97, a day, and says the pay exceeds that at other construction sites. She expects the project to keep bringing work.

That mix captures the hub’s promise and its pressure. Samsung’s expansion may support chip supply and local jobs. But progress depends on keeping workers safe as well as meeting the industry’s fast-moving demand.
