    Fast Facts

    1. Mass timber, an engineered wood product, is growing in construction popularity.
    2. Researchers are testing its seismic performance on a 10-story structure.
    3. The NHERI TallWood project simulates earthquakes to assess mass timber’s resilience.
    4. Findings could promote mass timber for sustainable, earthquake-safe building solutions.

    Advancements in Mass Timber Construction

Mass timber is transforming the construction industry. By bonding layers of wood, engineers create strong, sustainable building materials. These materials allow for quicker construction compared to traditional steel and concrete. Mass timber buildings can go up faster and use fewer resources, aligning with modern demands for sustainability.

As the use of mass timber increases, questions arise about its performance in earthquake-prone areas. Recent testing at the Large High Performance Outdoor Shake Table at the University of California, San Diego, is leading this investigation. Researchers are subjecting a ten-story mass timber building to rigorous earthquake simulations, assessing how well it can withstand varying magnitudes. This innovative approach may lead to safer and more resilient urban environments.

    Testing for Seismic Resilience

Shiling Pei, the project’s principal investigator, emphasizes the urgency of developing mass timber lateral systems for seismic regions. Traditional systems can incur damage during substantial earthquakes, complicating repairs. The NHERI TallWood project aims to demonstrate that mass timber structures can resist seismic forces effectively.

Previous tests showed a two-story mass timber building withstood the Northridge Earthquake’s violence without significant damage. Now, the NHERI TallWood project plans 40 tests on a more complex design featuring a rocking wall lateral system. This system enhances resilience in high-risk earthquake areas.

Engineers advocate for incorporating this new lateral system into U.S. building codes. If successful, mass timber could revolutionize urban infrastructure, making it greener and more efficient. The ongoing work showcases mass timber not just as a sustainable choice but as a practical solution for future construction challenges.
