    “Every time I try to solve a problem — whether it be physics or computer science — I always try to find an elegant solution,” says Thomas Bergamaschi, an MIT senior. His time in the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) at MIT’s Engineering Quantum Systems laboratory reflects this philosophy.

    Bergamaschi hails from Brazil, but the United States shaped his early years. His father, a software engineer, and his mother, who teaches English, instilled a love for science. He followed his older brother’s footsteps into physics. Encouraging teachers spurred his interest further, leading to international accolades in physics competitions.

    At MIT, Bergamaschi dove into quantum computing. His research focused on how to measure complex interactions in many-body quantum systems. He worked with leading researchers and published his findings in recognized journals. These hands-on experiences prepared him for challenges in the tech field.

    “Challenges are something that fuels me,” he states, looking ahead to his career as a software engineer at Five Rings. This position will let him tackle intriguing problems, fueling his passion for learning.

    Outside academia, he found refuge in soccer and supported Brazilian students in physics competitions. His commitment reflects a desire to inspire the next generation, just as he once was inspired.

    Bergamaschi’s time at MIT taught him essential skills. He learned to collaborate effectively and address challenges head-on. “One of my major motivators is my desire to learn new things,” he explains.

    As he prepares to graduate, Bergamaschi leaves with a lasting legacy of innovation and problem-solving spirit. His journey showcases how determination and a thirst for knowledge can shape technology’s future.
