    Quick Takeaways

    1. Historic Launch: Axiom Space’s Ax-4 mission will mark the first Indian astronaut, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, to orbit since 1984, launching aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 on June 11 from Kennedy Space Center.

    2. Diverse Crew: The four-member team includes former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson as commander, with Shukla, Polish astronaut Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski, and Hungarian astronaut Tibor Kapu, reflecting unprecedented international representation for an ISS mission.

    3. Research Goals: The Ax-4 crew will spend approximately 14 days on the ISS completing over 60 experiments contributed by more than 30 countries, setting a record for Axiom missions.

    4. Inspiration for Future: Shukla aspires to inspire a new generation of Indian astronauts, linking his mission to the dreams of 1.4 billion people, as India develops its own crewed spacecraft, Gaganyaan, set for a 2027 launch.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida — A historic mission is on the horizon as India prepares to send its first astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS) since 1984. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, a decorated pilot with the Indian Air Force, will serve as pilot for Axiom Space’s Ax-4 mission. Scheduled for launch on June 11, the mission will utilize a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.

The Ax-4 crew consists of four members, including former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson as commander. Whitson’s experience is extensive; she holds the record for the most cumulative time spent in space by an American, with 675 days. Joining Shukla and Whitson are Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary, both of whom are also embarking on their first spaceflights.

This mission aims to conduct over 60 experiments, showcasing contributions from more than 30 nations—a record for Axiom. Interestingly, while Poland, Hungary, and India have seen astronauts fly, none had previously sent representatives to the ISS.

The Ax-4 launch represents not just a milestone for India but also a significant leap in its space capabilities. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is currently developing a crew-capable spacecraft, Gaganyaan, set to launch in 2027. Shukla is among the selected astronauts for that mission, symbolizing the bright future of Indian human spaceflight.

Shukla’s journey reflects the hopes of 1.4 billion people. “This is the journey of 1.4 billion people,” he said, underscoring the mission’s broader significance. His paths crossed with space science at an early age, and now, he aims to inspire future astronauts across India.

Axiom’s Ax-4 mission will launch from KSC’s Launch Complex-39A at 8:00 a.m. EDT. After a day of travel aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, the crew will dock with the ISS on June 12. The science conducted during their 14-day stay could lead to advancements that improve life on Earth, demonstrating the endless potential of international collaboration in space exploration.

As Shukla prepares for lift-off, he stands on the shoulders of India’s space pioneers, making history and paving the way for future generations.
