    Fast Facts

    1. Zooniverse celebrates 1 billion classifications from global volunteers in research.
    2. 31 NASA projects on Zooniverse led to 120 million classifications since 2020.
    3. Volunteer contributions have resulted in 96 scientific publications recognizing citizen scientists.
    4. Collaboration is vital for future discoveries with massive datasets from NASA missions.

Celebrating a Billion Classifications: The Power of Citizen Science

The Zooniverse has reached a remarkable milestone: one billion classifications made by volunteers around the globe. This achievement highlights the vital role that citizen scientists play in advancing research. Each classification, whether confirming a light curve dip or identifying a species from a camera trap image, contributes significantly to our understanding of the universe.

Since 2020, 31 NASA-sponsored citizen science projects on Zooniverse have been instrumental in this effort. Volunteers have completed approximately 120 million classifications through various initiatives, including Planet Hunters TESS and Backyard Worlds: Planet 9. The combined efforts of around 324,000 volunteers showcase the power of public participation in tackling scientific questions. These projects play a pivotal role in discovering exoplanets, identifying near-Earth objects, and even informing wildlife management strategies. As of now, these endeavors have led to 96 scientific publications, with 56 articles recognizing NASA citizen scientists as co-authors.

The Future of Collaboration in Science

Zooniverse exemplifies the partnership between technology and human curiosity. Co-founded by the Adler Planetarium and the University of Oxford, with the University of Minnesota as a key partner, it opens doors for anyone to engage in scientific research. The platform provides tools and a community of more than 3 million registered volunteers, fostering a collaborative environment. This infrastructure enhances the capabilities of NASA researchers, allowing them to process enormous datasets efficiently.

Looking ahead, the collaboration between volunteers, scientists, and technology will face unique challenges. As NASA prepares for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope’s launch, the demand for public assistance in data analysis will only grow. This partnership model presents both tremendous opportunities and practical considerations, as it harnesses collective human ingenuity to make sense of complex datasets.

Laura Trouille, a key figure at Zooniverse, encapsulates the essence of this achievement: “One billion classifications represent far more than a number; it’s one billion moments of curiosity transformed into meaningful contributions to research.” Each classification moves us closer to discoveries that deepen our understanding of the universe and our place within it.
