    Fast Facts

    1. Egyptian officials announced the discovery of the 3,500-year-old tomb of King Thutmose II, the first major find since King Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922, emphasizing its significance to Egypt’s archaeological history.

    2. Excavated artifacts, including alabaster jar fragments with inscriptions of Thutmose II and Queen Hatshepsut, confirmed the tomb’s ownership, marking the first instance of funerary goods belonging to Thutmose II uncovered.

    3. The tomb, located in the Thebes area near Luxor, was initially thought to belong to one of Thutmose III’s wives due to its proximity to their tombs; however, evidence indicated that Queen Hatshepsut played a key role in overseeing Thutmose II’s burial.

    4. The excavation, starting in 2022 with collaboration from the UK’s New Kingdom Research Foundation, adds crucial information to understanding the reign of Thutmose II amidst challenges posed by the tomb’s condition due to flooding.

Thutmose II’s Tomb Discovered: A Historic Archaeological Find

Egyptian officials announced the discovery of the tomb of King Thutmose II, marking an incredible archaeological milestone. This find represents the biggest discovery in Egypt since King Tutankhamun’s tomb was unearthed in 1922.

Archaeologists, including experts from Britain, made the landmark discovery in the mount of Thebes region, located west of Luxor and close to the famous Valley of the Kings. Mohamed Ismail Khaled, the secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, emphasized the tomb’s significance. “This is the first time funerary furniture belonging to Thutmose II has been discovered,” he stated. No such items exist in global museums, highlighting the tomb’s uniqueness.

The excavation team initially believed the tomb belonged to one of King Thutmose III’s wives. This assumption arose due to the tomb’s location near the royal wives’ burial site and the tomb of Queen Hatshepsut, also a pharaoh. However, artefacts found inside the tomb, including fragments of alabaster jars, bore inscriptions linking them to Thutmose II and Queen Hatshepsut, his primary wife. This discovery provided decisive evidence of the tomb’s ownership.

Despite the tomb’s compromised condition due to flooding, the excavation yielded important historical insights. Even with challenges, Sudanese archaeologist Mohamed Abdel Badie noted the artefacts’ significance. They enhance our understanding of the rich history surrounding Thutmose II’s reign and the burial practices of the time.

The excavation, which began in 2022, collaborates with the New Kingdom Research Foundation in the UK. Interestingly, King Thutmose II’s mummy, previously discovered in the 19th century at the Deir el-Bahari Cachette, contributes to ongoing research. After tomb raiders looted it, the mummy eventually found a safe home at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, alongside other royal relics.

This discovery of Thutmose II’s tomb not only excites historians but also impacts technology development in archaeology. Innovative methods, including ground-penetrating radar and 3D imaging, assist modern archaeologists to unearth ancient secrets securely.

As Egypt reaffirms its cultural heritage, the tomb of Thutmose II embodies a fascinating chapter in history, promising ongoing research and exploration.
