    1. NSF launched the EGFP to support talented students receiving GRFP Honorable Mentions.
    2. Awards can provide up to $37,000 annually for three years of funding.
    3. Proposals must come from eligible EPSCoR jurisdictions to engage prospective fellows.

A New Avenue for Aspiring Scientists

You’ve likely heard of the U.S. National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). This well-known program helps fund graduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It opens doors to rewarding careers in academia, industry, and beyond. Now, the NSF has launched a new initiative: the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) Graduate Fellowship Program (EGFP). Introduced in May 2024, this program targets exceptionally talented individuals who received Honorable Mention from GRFP within the last three years.

The EGFP awards provide substantial support for graduate education. Each fellowship can fund up to $37,000 annually for three years. These funds cover stipends and education costs, helping students focus on their research. The program enjoys backing from all eight NSF directorates and the Office of Integrative Activities. Each participating organization has specific areas it prioritizes for funding. Interested candidates should look closely at these topical areas.

    Application Process and Opportunities

Academic institutions in eligible EPSCoR jurisdictions must submit proposals for the EGFP. Once institutions receive EGFP awards, they must utilize the NSF Education and Training Application (ETAP) system. This system helps recruit prospective fellows. Institutions will actively seek out candidates from the pool of highly qualified individuals who earned Honorable Mention from the GRFP within three years of applying.

Students eager to participate should complete their applications in ETAP. To qualify, they must have already received an Honorable Mention. Here are a few tips for applicants: First, read the solicitation (NSF 24-588) thoroughly. This document contains detailed instructions on submitting a successful application. Next, access ETAP for both the principal investigator and the prospective fellow. Principal Investigators create EGFP Opportunities in ETAP for prospective fellows to apply. Lastly, fellows can apply to graduate programs outside their previous GRFP application fields. However, they must remain in the same discipline once enrolled.

For those interested in this promising opportunity, a wealth of resources exists. Consulting the EGFP fact sheet can provide additional insights. If questions arise during the application process, contacting the EGFP office via email can clarify any uncertainties. The EGFP represents a fresh, meaningful investment in the future of scientific research and education.
