    Summary Points

    1. Over 200 top economists and AI researchers warn of rapid AI-driven economic change.
    2. The open letter lacks significant Chinese representation, despite China’s AI leadership.
    3. Western companies increasingly adopt Chinese AI models due to cost and efficiency.
    4. Chinese models like Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 challenge US dominance, shifting the global AI landscape.

The West’s Debate on AI’s Future Highlights a Missing Piece

Recently, more than 200 top experts, including Nobel laureates, issued a serious warning about AI. They said AI could change the economy more than the Industrial Revolution, and soon. However, an important detail stands out. Most signatories come from the U.S. and Europe. Not one person from China appears on the list. This absence is not accidental. It reveals a larger issue about understanding the full scope of AI development.

This omission shows how the Western view of AI risks being incomplete. While Western companies lead in many areas, China’s role in AI is massive. China produces half of the world’s advanced AI models. It adopts new AI technology faster than many other countries. Ignoring China in this conversation about AI’s future is like studying the Industrial Revolution without considering the country with the most factories. To truly understand AI’s trajectory, we need to look at the entire global picture.

Understanding the Global AI Landscape and Its Practical Impact

The gap in information about China’s AI progress affects more than just debates. Many Western companies are already using Chinese AI models. They use these models because they are cheaper to run and often just as powerful. For example, companies like DoorDash and Siemens incorporate Chinese models alongside American ones. This blend makes economic sense, especially for cost-sensitive organizations.

Furthermore, recent Chinese AI models—such as Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3—are competitive with top US models. The Kimi K3 has 2.8 trillion parameters, making it the largest open-source AI model. It matches or exceeds some benchmarks set by American models. This development alarms US investors, causing stocks of chip manufacturers and AI companies to tumble. It highlights how Chinese AI is not just a competitor but a vital part of the global AI ecosystem, shaping our collective future and human progress.
