    Top Highlights

    1. Tesla Supercharger Access: Lucid Air sedan owners can charge their vehicles at Tesla Supercharger stations in North America starting July 31, 2023, with an approved $220 adapter.

    2. Charging Limitations: Lucid Air will only charge at 50 kW, significantly slower than the Tesla Superchargers’ peak rate of 250 kW, due to a voltage mismatch.

    3. Engineering Solution: Lucid repurposed hardware in the Air’s Wunderbox charging system to enable this lower charging rate, providing an option for road trips or nearby charging.

    4. NACS Adaptation: Future Lucid vehicles, including the Gravity SUV, will adopt Tesla’s North America Charging Standard (NACS), following a trend among other automakers to integrate this charging technology.

New Charging Opportunities for Lucid Air Owners

Starting July 31, Lucid Air owners will gain access to Tesla Supercharger stations across North America. This marks a significant milestone for the luxury electric vehicle (EV). Nearly two years in the making, this agreement allows all Lucid Air models to charge at thousands of Tesla’s fast-charging points. For a fee of $220, owners can purchase an approved adapter to access this network.

However, the charging experience won’t match what Tesla vehicle owners enjoy. Lucid Air will only charge at 50 kW, a stark contrast to the 250 kW peak rate available at some Superchargers. This discrepancy arises from a difference in charging systems. Tesla’s Superchargers operate on a 400-volt framework, while Lucid’s vehicles utilize an 800-volt system. Consequently, Lucid owners may feel some frustration, as their charging speed lags significantly behind Tesla vehicles.

    A Step Toward Widespread Adoption

Yet, Lucid’s move presents a practical solution for road-tripping enthusiasts. Lucid’s spokesperson noted that this new capability offers an additional option for charging away from home. The ability to use Tesla stations may enhance the overall experience for Lucid Air owners, especially those living or working near Supercharger locations.

Moreover, this partnership can contribute to broader trends in electric vehicle adoption. Many automakers, like Ford and GM, have started aligning with Tesla’s North America Charging Standard (NACS). As more companies adopt NACS, charging infrastructure will likely become more standardized and accessible. This could pave the way for increased EV adoption, making electric mobility more practical for everyday drivers. With Lucid’s Gravity SUV set to feature the built-in NACS port, the growing ecosystem of EV charging continues evolving. The future of electric vehicles looks brighter, creating new possibilities for all drivers.
