    Essential Insights

    1. Vivo’s X300 Ultra focuses on a balanced camera system over telephoto extremes.
    2. It features a 35mm main camera, unique among flagships for its focal length.
    3. Despite its bland design, the camera system offers impressive versatility and quality.
    4. Vivo wins the Ultra camera contest, prioritizing consistency across all lenses.

    Vivo’s Unique Camera Philosophy

A few months ago, I stated that telephoto lenses are the key feature for flagship smartphones. As the competition heats up, companies like Xiaomi, Oppo, and Huawei prioritize advanced telephoto capabilities in their ultra-class devices. They scream for attention with jaw-dropping zoom features. But Vivo’s X300 Ultra takes a different route. It does not chase after extremes in telephoto hardware. Instead, Vivo excels in a balanced approach, placing a spotlight on its 35mm main camera.

This camera uses a large 200-megapixel sensor, offering natural perspective and superb quality. The 35mm focal length, rare among today’s smartphones, closely replicates the human eye’s view. Many users have noted their main cameras start resembling ultrawides, but the X300 Ultra turns that trend around. It feels refreshing. The telephoto lens, while strong with 85mm and a similar sensor resolution, focuses on stabilization and performance tweaks rather than flashy features. The ultrawide camera follows suit, boasting impressive specs and top-notch optical image stabilization. Together, all three rear lenses deliver remarkably similar quality across various conditions, making it easy to choose the right shot without worrying about differences in performance.

Vivo has not ignored video capabilities. The X300 Ultra offers 4K, 120fps recording across all lenses, complete with manual controls and professional features. This versatility caters to both casual users and professionals looking for an all-in-one solution. While the separate camera grips and add-ons enhance usability, the X300 Ultra’s camera system stands strong on its own.

    Overall Value and Design Considerations

Despite its camera prowess, the Vivo X300 Ultra does face challenges. Its design lacks flair and feels uninspired, especially when compared to competitors. The chunky camera island dominates the back of the phone, and missing a physical shutter button is a letdown. Yet, its internal specs hold up against rival flagship devices. The 6,600mAh battery and 144Hz refresh rate contribute to a satisfying user experience.

When weighing practicality, the price point of approximately $2,340 raises eyebrows. This cost aligns with premium offerings from other brands, yet the X300 Ultra does not quite compete in aesthetics. The OriginOS, while improved, falls short in comparison to rivals. Minor issues like pre-installed apps can detract from user experience.

While the Xiaomi 17 Ultra may offer a more polished overall package, the X300 Ultra’s exceptional lens quality provides a strong argument for its value. For users who prioritize photography over everything else, Vivo’s approach delivers. Flaws may exist, but the photographic experience remains stellar across different conditions. The X300 Ultra allows users to focus on capturing moments, placing it at the forefront of mobile photography in today’s crowded market.
