AI Should Decide Your Court Case, Says Judge

    Quick Takeaways

    1. AI could decide simpler civil disputes—but only if people consent or society authorizes it through law.
    2. Trust and legitimacy matter: people may find machine-made rulings harder to accept, even when the reasoning sounds convincing.
    3. Human judges aren’t going away: family and complex commercial cases still call for human judgment.
    4. Technology can widen access to justice by making legal processes faster and cheaper; fake evidence, meanwhile, can still lead to perjury charges.

AI Could Speed Up Simple Cases

A judge sees AI handling a growing share of simpler civil disputes. The appeal is clear: faster decisions, lower costs and better access to justice. AI can also sort large volumes of information, helping courts manage commercial cases more efficiently.

But speed is not the only measure of fairness. People may accept a difficult ruling more readily when a human judge delivers it. A machine’s decision could feel harder to challenge or trust.

Trust Requires Consent and Clear Limits

AI can offer convincing explanations. Yet readers cannot always see how a model reached its answer. That gap matters when a decision affects someone’s rights, money or family.

Public consent should shape adoption. People might agree to use AI for a particular case, or lawmakers could set rules for its use. Either way, society must decide where automation belongs. Family and custody disputes, for example, call for human judgment. Complex commercial cases may, too.

    Keep People at the Center

AI will not replace human judges across the board. Many people want to be judged by another person. Still, some may prefer a quick, affordable decision in a straightforward dispute.

Courts also need to protect the record. Submitting fake images as evidence can amount to perjury and bring prison time, much like forging a will. That risk makes strong checks essential.

The next step is open debate among the public, lawmakers and courts. AI could widen access to justice. But people must help set the terms.
