    Essential Insights

    1. A 6-month-old in Bangkok developed bluish corneas after starting favipiravir treatment for COVID-19, a rare side effect linked to the drug’s fluorescent properties.
    2. Similar cases have been documented before, including a young man in India and women in Turkey, where favipiravir caused eye and tissue fluorescence under UV light.
    3. The bluish discoloration was temporary, resolving within days after stopping favipiravir, with the child’s corneas returning to normal in about five days.
    4. This case is notable as the first pediatric report of blue eyes caused by favipiravir, highlighting rare side effects and the importance of monitoring drug reactions.

    Understanding the Case

A 6-month-old baby in Bangkok developed a curious change in eye color after COVID treatment. He had a fever and cough, tested positive for COVID-19, and was given favipiravir. This antiviral medicine is used to fight RNA viruses, including some coronaviruses. Remarkably, 18 hours into treatment, his normally brown eyes turned a bluish-purple. The corneas looked blue in sunlight, but no other skin or nail changes appeared. Doctors suspected the medication caused this color change.

    The Medical Explanation

This phenomenon may result from how favipiravir is broken down in the body. The drug releases fluorescent chemicals that gather in the cornea. These chemicals can glow under certain lights, creating a blue or green tint in the eyes and, in some cases, hair and nails. Previous reports in adults and young women show similar effects, often fading after stopping the medication. In this case, the child’s eyes returned to normal after five days. Researchers believe factors like age and dosage influence how long the discoloration lasts.

    Practical Impact and Broader Implications

While side effects like this are rare, they highlight the importance of monitoring drugs’ effects closely. The case opens discussions about the safety of favipiravir in children and young patients. It also emphasizes that odd reactions can help us understand more about how medicines work in our bodies. With ongoing research, health professionals can improve treatment safety and learn to anticipate unusual responses. Such discoveries are vital steps in advancing medicine, ensuring that more lives benefit from safe and effective care.
