    Top Highlights

    1. The Zcash network was reportedly offline, but it was actually a block explorer glitch; the blockchain kept functioning normally.
    2. The outage scare was linked to a recent coordinated upgrade to patch a vulnerability in Orchard, which involved a temporary suspension of Orchard transactions.
    3. The upgrade was successful, with no exploits or impact on user funds, confirming Zcash’s security and stability.
    4. Zcash’s token ZEC is rallying, up nearly 45% in a month, with strong social buzz and a potential for further gains above $500.

Why Zcash (ZEC) Network Looked Offline for Hours

    Blockchain Status Misunderstood
On Wednesday, some users believed that the Zcash network had gone offline. This impression came after block explorers showed no new blocks for more than four hours. However, in reality, the blockchain itself continued to run normally. Mert Mumtaz, CEO of Helius, clarified this point. He explained that the issue was with the tools used to view the network, called block explorers. These explorers were not updating correctly because they connected to a faulty node. Therefore, users saw no new activity, even though the blockchain kept producing blocks behind the scenes. This confusion lasted a few hours but did not impact the network’s security or operation.

Upgrade to Fix a Security Issue
The temporary misinterpretation of downtime was related to a recent network upgrade. Zcash developers made this upgrade to fix a security vulnerability in Orchard, Zcash’s latest shielded transaction pool. The process involved a two-step upgrade: first, a soft fork was activated to pause Orchard activities. Next, a hard fork fixed the vulnerability completely. After these steps, Orchard transactions resumed, and the network remained secure. Zcash’s open development lab confirmed there was no evidence of exploitation or unauthorized activity during this time. Users’ funds stayed safe, and other parts of Zcash, like Sapling and transparent transactions, were unaffected. This upgrade was part of ongoing efforts to improve security and protect user assets.
