    Essential Insights

    1. New research indicates lake sturgeon in the Great Lakes may live for over 400 years, much longer than previously believed.
    2. Traditional aging methods failed due to tightly packed growth rings, scientists used capture-mark-recapture data to estimate lifespan.
    3. Estimated ages range from 90 to over 427 years, potentially making some lake sturgeon among the longest-lived vertebrates on Earth.
    4. This discovery highlights their fragile populations—less than 1% remain—and underscores the urgent need for long-term conservation efforts.

The ‘Living Dinosaur’ of the Water

Scientists recently discovered that lake sturgeon can live for hundreds of years. Some may reach ages up to 427 years, making them one of the longest-lived vertebrates. These fish are called “living fossils” because their ancestors date back about 200 million years. This means that some sturgeon swimming today might have been alive before the United States was formed. Their long lives help us understand how they have survived through many changes on Earth.

    How Researchers Measured Their Age

Traditionally, scientists estimate fish ages by counting growth rings in bones or ear stones, similar to counting tree rings. However, lake sturgeon grow so slowly that their rings become too thin to count accurately. Instead, researchers used a different method. They tagged fish in several Great Lakes locations and tracked their growth over time. By comparing measurements from the same fish years apart, they estimated how long these fish can live. Their findings show that female sturgeon may live up to 427 years, and males up to 279 years.

Implications for Conservation and Human Impact

Knowing how long lake sturgeon can live helps us plan better conservation efforts. Because they reproduce slowly and take many decades to mature, losing adult fish impacts populations deeply. Today, less than 1% of their original numbers remain in the Great Lakes. The fish’s extraordinary lifespan means they are vulnerable to threats like overfishing, dams, and habitat loss. Protecting these ancient creatures requires long-term strategies and careful management. Their longevity reminds us, though, that some species are resilient if we give them a chance to survive.
