MacBook Pro OLED: Not the Touchscreen Mac I Wanted

    Summary Points

    1. Apple’s first touchscreen MacBook Pro marks a step toward blending Macs and iPads—but it doesn’t fundamentally change the laptop.
    2. Touch features seem limited: the screen doesn’t fold back, Apple Pencil isn’t supported, and macOS isn’t redesigned around touch.
    3. The standout upgrade is the OLED display; touch feels like an extra on a premium laptop starting at $2,899.
    4. The bigger opportunity is a flexible, touch-first Mac–iPad hybrid—and the author hopes Apple delivers one soon.

The MacBook Pro OLED Isn’t the Touchscreen Mac I Was Looking For

A welcome screen, not a new kind of Mac

Apple’s first touchscreen MacBook Pro is expected Nov. 6, 2026, with prices starting at $2,899. Its OLED display is the main attraction. OLED can deliver rich contrast and deep blacks, making photos, video and everyday viewing more vivid.

Touch is an extra. The screen still sits at a standard laptop angle, and the design does not fold into a tablet. I haven’t tried it, but the announced features don’t yet suggest a major change in how the Mac works.

    Touch has everyday appeal

Many people already reach for a laptop screen out of habit, especially after using a phone or iPad. Touch could make simple tasks feel more direct. It may also help families and new users navigate apps.

Still, an upright screen is not ideal for drawing. This MacBook Pro does not support Apple Pencil, and touch does not replace the flexible shape of an iPad. For people who need a powerful laptop, the new display may be meaningful. For those hoping for one device that works as both Mac and tablet, the price and design leave a gap.

    A promising first step

Apple’s move suggests that the line between Macs and iPads may keep narrowing. Yet bringing touch to a Mac is only part of the challenge. Software, app compatibility and a design that changes shape matter, too.

A future Mac that folds back, supports Pencil and runs professional apps could serve more needs with less gear. That could benefit artists, students and households alike. This MacBook Pro does not deliver that vision, but it makes the possibility easier to imagine.
