    Essential Insights

    1. Sony has discontinued its last dedicated 4K Blu-ray player in Japan, leaving disc-capable PS5 models as its remaining UHD players there.
    2. The PS5 can play 4K Blu-rays, but lacks Dolby Vision support; discs still offer better picture quality than streaming.
    3. Sony plans to stop producing physical discs for new PS5 games from January 2028, though existing discs will continue to work.
    4. A detachable PS6 disc drive is rumored, but Sony’s retreat from physical media makes the format’s future uncertain.

The PlayStation 5 Just Might Be Sony’s Final Blu-ray Player

Sony’s disc-player era is winding down

Sony helped bring CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs into living rooms. Now, the company appears to be stepping back from dedicated movie players.

On Oct. 22, 2026, Sony confirmed it would end shipments of its UBP-X700/K 4K Blu-ray player in Japan. The model, released in 2025, was Sony’s last standalone 4K Blu-ray player there. Retailers in other markets may still have stock, but availability varies.

That leaves the PlayStation 5 as Sony’s main device in Japan that can play 4K Blu-ray movies. The standard PS5 includes a disc drive. Owners of some Slim and Pro models can add one separately.

The console offers a useful combination: It plays games, streams video and handles 4K and standard Blu-ray discs. For many households, that makes it a better value than buying several separate devices.

Yet the PS5 does not match every feature of Sony’s dedicated player. In particular, it does not support Dolby Vision for compatible 4K movies. And although 4K Blu-ray discs can deliver sharper pictures and richer sound than many streaming services, streaming wins on ease. Viewers can press play without buying, storing or changing discs.

That trade-off helps explain Sony’s move. Disc players serve a committed audience, but fewer shoppers choose them. For movie fans who prize picture quality and ownership, the change still stings.

Physical games face a major turning point

Sony also plans to stop producing physical discs for new PS5 games beginning in January 2028. Players will still use existing game discs. However, new releases will come through the PlayStation Store or through retailer-sold redemption codes, rather than on new PS5 discs.

This shift could make buying games simpler. Digital stores offer quick downloads, and players can keep a library without making room for cases. Retail codes also give shoppers a way to buy some digital titles in person.

But digital ownership works differently. A disc can be lent, resold or played without downloading the full game, depending on the title and console setup. A digital purchase ties access to an account and the store’s rules. That may feel less secure to players who want a lasting, tangible collection.

Movie discs face similar concerns, along with a separate threat: disc rot. Some discs can degrade over time, although storage and manufacturing quality affect how long they last. Physical media does not guarantee permanence. Still, a disc collection gives owners a copy they can play without relying on a streaming service’s changing catalog or internet connection.

Sony’s retreat also reflects a wider industry shift. LG stopped making Blu-ray players in 2024, and Samsung left the market years earlier. Panasonic remains a major player, while smaller specialist brands continue to serve enthusiasts. That leaves fewer large manufacturers to develop and sell new hardware.

Fewer choices do not mean Blu-ray will vanish overnight. Existing players and discs will remain in homes, and dedicated fans may keep demand alive. Still, a smaller market can make future hardware harder to find and more expensive.

The PS6 could leave the choice to players

Sony has not confirmed whether the PlayStation 6 will include a disc drive. That uncertainty matters. If new PS5 games stop arriving on discs, Sony may see less reason to build an optical drive into every next-generation console.

One report has suggested that Sony could offer a detachable drive for the PS6. That approach would let shoppers buy a digital-only console, choose a bundle with a drive or add the accessory later. Sony already offers a detachable drive for some PS5 models, so the idea fits its current strategy. But no confirmed PS6 details settle the question.

A detachable drive could give players flexibility. Digital buyers would avoid paying for hardware they do not use. Collectors could keep playing discs, at least if Sony supports them. However, an optional accessory adds another cost, and buyers would need to check compatibility before upgrading.

For now, the PS5 still gives movie and game collectors a bridge between physical and digital media. It can play existing discs, even as Sony narrows its support for new ones. That makes today’s console more than a gaming machine. It may also be the last Sony device that lets fans enjoy 4K movie discs without reaching beyond the PlayStation lineup.

The PS6 remains a question mark. But Sony’s choices already point toward a future where convenience gets the shelf space that discs once claimed.
