On average, the apps estimated about 250 to 345 calories less than the real amount per meal. They also underestimated fat intake by approximately 30 grams. While some apps did better with higher-calorie meals, all tended to underestimate total intake. This means users might think they are eating less than they actually are.

    The findings suggest that relying solely on these apps may lead to underestimating calorie intake, especially from fats. This could impact those aiming for precise calorie control. The research also hints that meals on low-carb diets, which often contain more fat, may be harder for AI to measure accurately.
