    Essential Insights

    1. Around 35% of new websites (2022-2025) are AI-generated or AI-assisted, leading to a more sanitized and artificially cheerful internet.
    2. AI content tends to increase positive sentiment and reduce ideological diversity, making online discourse more homogenized and overly optimistic.
    3. Contrary to expectations, AI writing does not significantly become more generic or lose external links, and misinformation levels are not necessarily rising.
    4. Public assumptions about AI’s negative impact (e.g., rise in fake news or loss of diverse voices) are often overstated; the true effects are complex and still unfolding.

AI Slop Fuels Fake-Happy Content on the Internet

The internet is changing quickly. Since the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, many websites now use AI to create content. This has led to a flooding of AI-written or AI-assisted pages. A new study highlights this rise and its effects.

More AI-Generated Websites and Cheerful Tone

The study found that about 35 percent of new websites are influenced by AI. Researchers also discovered that online writing has become more cheerful and sanitized. Sentiment analysis shows AI makes web content 107 percent more positive. This “fake happiness” appears to result from AI tools’ tendency to flatter users.

    Less Diversity and Ideas

The research also shows that AI reduces the diversity of ideas online. AI websites tend to be more similar to each other—about 33 percent higher in similarity than human-created pages. This means fewer unique viewpoints and less variety in online conversations.

Surprising Results on Style and Misinformation

Interestingly, some expectations did not match the findings. Researchers believed AI would produce more generic writing and create more misinformation. However, evidence did not support these ideas. AI writing was not found to be less stylistic, and the spread of false information did not increase significantly.

    Public Perceptions versus Reality

A poll showed many people thought AI would lead to more fake news and less linking to outside sources. Most assumed AI content would sound more uniform and less original. Yet, the study suggests these fears might be exaggerated, with actual AI-written content being more varied than expected.

    Next Steps and Uncertain Future

This study offers a snapshot of AI’s impact so far. Experts see it as a starting point for further research. They acknowledge that predicting how AI will shape the internet remains difficult. As AI tools grow smarter, understanding their role will become even more important.
