Algorand Aims to Be Quantum-Resistant by 2027

    Plans for Post-Quantum Security

Algorand, a blockchain network using proof-of-stake technology, announced plans to become resistant to quantum threats by 2027. The company recognizes that quantum computers could someday break current cryptography, risking the security of blockchain data. To address this, Algorand is exploring post-quantum cryptography (PQC), which uses new algorithms designed to withstand quantum attacks. The team outlined a timeline with specific milestones. They started this journey in 2025, with their first PQC-secured transaction. Now, they plan to introduce native support for post-quantum accounts by late 2026. This step will allow the network to support multiple signature schemes and improve security for future digital assets. The team also plans to upgrade related tools and software to fully support these new cryptographic methods.

    Developing Quantum-Resistant Multisignatures

Additionally, Algorand is working on advanced multisignatures that incorporate post-quantum security. These multisignatures will let users combine different types of signatures, creating more flexible and secure approval methods. By the end of 2026, native support for multisignatures using multiple cryptography schemes should be available. This feature is especially useful for institutions and financial applications that need high security. One of the key goals is to create a protocol that can evolve easily as new cryptographic advancements develop. In the future, Algorand plans to implement post-quantum multisignatures as a policy layer. This will enable weighted approvals, hybrid signatures, and the adoption of new quantum-proof algorithms as they become standards soon. Other blockchain networks like Ethereum and Ripple are also working toward similar security upgrades.
