    Fast Facts

    1. AI-developed Apollo, the first large language model for Ancient Greek, helps scholars quickly restore and analyze damaged papyri, accelerating research.
    2. Trained on 600 million Greek words, Apollo can fill in missing text by predicting the most likely words, saving time and improving accuracy.
    3. While it won’t produce new ancient texts, Apollo enhances understanding of everyday life in antiquity by revealing hidden details in existing documents.
    4. Human expertise remains essential to prevent errors, with Apollo serving as a tool to assist, not replace, scholars in interpreting historical materials.

New Technology Helps Unlock Ancient Greek Records

Many ancient Greek documents are damaged and hard to read. Libraries worldwide hold hundreds of thousands of these fragile papyrus fragments. Usually, experts spend years carefully restoring them. Now, a new artificial intelligence tool called Apollo can assist with this work. Developed in Austria with partners from France, Apollo is the first advanced language model in this field. It is trained on about 600 million Greek words from old manuscripts, inscriptions, and texts. The goal is to help scholars find relevant fragments faster and explore new research ideas.

    How Apollo Works for Scholars

Apollo fills in missing parts of torn or smeared documents. When a document is damaged, the model suggests the most likely words or phrases that fit. It recognizes dialects, styles, and historical contexts, making educated guesses based on its training data. For example, if the model sees a reference to Homer, it predicts Homeric Greek language. Because of this, experts can focus on analyzing content rather than decoding messy handwriting. Many scholars see Apollo as a tool to speed up their work and uncover hidden details about ancient life.

Potential and Cautions for Using AI in History

While Apollo can help recover many texts, it won’t instantly bring new ancient works to light. Most papyri are everyday documents, not famous plays or poems. But understanding details from personal letters and contracts can still improve our knowledge about ancient societies. Additionally, this approach might be applied to other languages and disciplines. However, some worry that relying too much on AI might introduce errors. To prevent this, Apollo offers multiple options for each reconstruction, keeping human judgment essential. This careful use of technology ensures that history remains accurate and reliable.
