    Summary Points

    1. Court Ruling: A US court denied Apple’s appeal, enforcing a ruling that halts its ability to collect fees on purchases made outside the App Store, ending the so-called "Apple tax."

    2. Legal Background: The decision stems from Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers’ earlier ruling, which stated that Apple violated a 2021 order allowing developers to direct users to alternative payment systems.

    3. Immediate Compliance: The ruling requires Apple to immediately stop fee collection for external payments and prohibits rules that restrict developers from offering external payment links.

    4. Industry Impact: Companies like Amazon and Spotify are adapting to this change by implementing external payment methods, while Epic Games’ Fortnite has finally returned to the App Store after being denied previously.

A U.S. court has denied Apple’s appeal for an emergency hold on a ruling regarding app fees. This decision means Apple can no longer collect fees when users click on links within apps for external purchases, according to TechCrunch.

Earlier this year, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers found that Apple violated a previous ruling in the Epic Games lawsuit. The judge had ordered Apple to allow developers to direct users to alternative payment systems, bypassing the App Store’s typical 30% commission fee. Despite this, Apple reportedly took up to a 27% cut on external purchases and included warnings that users would lose protections when paying outside the App Store.

The ruling mandates immediate compliance, prohibiting Apple from blocking developers from offering external payment options. In response, Apple filed an appeal for an emergency hold, hoping to revert to collecting fees, but this request has now been denied.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeny welcomed the court’s decision, stating that it marks the end of what he called the “Apple tax.” This could lead to significant changes in how developers manage payments. Some companies, like Amazon and Spotify, have quickly adapted by establishing external payment methods within their apps.

Epic has reintroduced Fortnite to the App Store after a lengthy absence, but accusations of retaliation from Apple remain. The evolving landscape indicates a push toward greater flexibility for developers and potentially better deals for users. As the tech world anticipates future developments, the focus on alternative payment solutions promises to reshape the digital marketplace.
