    Summary Points

    1. FBI warns cybercriminals hack social media to steal explicit content.
    2. Perpetrators use social engineering, phishing, and password brute-force attacks.
    3. Victims face harassment, sextortion, and online re-victimization risks.
    4. Protect yourself by using strong passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication.

The Rise of Cybercriminal Attacks on Personal Accounts

The FBI has issued a warning about a concerning trend: cybercriminals are hacking into social media accounts to steal intimate pictures and videos. These attackers often use social engineering tricks to target both adults and children. Once they access accounts, they may extort victims or publish stolen content online. Many victims face repeated trauma, including harassment, stalking, or sextortion, where criminals demand money to remove the images.

These crimes have existed for years but seem to be increasing. Experts say the rise indicates a growing problem that affects mental health and safety. Rachel Tobac, CEO of SocialProof Security, notes that young boys are often targeted. She calls this issue a “public health concern,” as victims sometimes respond to threats with self-harm.

The FBI advises that attackers use various methods, such as brute-forcing passwords, phishing emails, and impersonating social media support agents. They often rely on leaked passwords or fake login pages to trick victims into giving up access. Victims may also receive fake messages claiming to help recover their accounts, which are actually scams.

How to Protect Yourself and Your Content

People can take steps to secure their online lives. Use unique passwords for each account and store them safely in a password manager. Enable multi-factor authentication whenever possible, which adds an extra layer of security. Be wary of unsolicited contacts claiming to work for social media platforms. Usually, social media companies do not reach out to users directly for account recovery.

The FBI urges users to avoid storing sensitive or intimate pictures in online accounts. This minimizes the damage if hackers gain access. Being cautious online and understanding common scam tactics can help protect personal information and images from falling into the wrong hands.
