Targeted Crime and New Security Measures

France has experienced a surge in crimes linked to cryptocurrencies. Since the start of the year, officials reported 77 cases involving kidnappings, extortion, or attempted kidnappings. This number is more than double the 45 cases recorded last year. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez shared this news during a meeting with the Association of Digital Asset Holders on June 30. He explained that while the incidents are serious, recent emergency security measures have helped curb the problem. Nuñez also mentioned that about 200 people have been arrested in connection with these crimes since last year. For example, suspects linked to an incident in the Somme region were arrested within eight hours after the victim used a special hotline for crypto sector members. Moreover, the government’s ongoing efforts include registering more industry participants, now totaling 724 people. These steps come as part of a new, more ambitious security plan. It aims to improve information sharing, strengthen industry-government collaboration, and boost international cooperation.

Focus on Intelligence, Cooperation, and Disruption Tactics

The new plan emphasizes expanding intelligence sharing, especially since criminals often operate across borders. Nuñez explained that stronger spying on criminal networks can help stop attacks before they happen. The plan also aims to build a network of experts. This network will connect industry leaders with government officials to improve cooperation. Another focus is better coordination between law enforcement agencies. The goal is to disrupt criminal groups more quickly and effectively. Nuñez highlighted the importance of working with foreign authorities. For example, authorities in Morocco recently arrested a man suspected of organizing kidnappings targeting crypto professionals. This arrest helped put an end to some of the attacks. Despite these efforts, attacks and threats continue. In March, an individual was robbed of approximately $24 million in digital assets, with assailants using weapons and threats. As criminals grow more sophisticated, authorities aim to stay a step ahead to protect industry participants.
