Smart City FC Faces Two-Year Ban and Fine from Lagos State FA

LAGOS, Nigeria — Smart City Football Club has received a two-year ban and a fine of six million naira, according to a statement from the Lagos State Football Association. This action follows a violent incident during the State Federation Cup match against Inter Lagos.

The trouble began when Bankole Afeez, a player for Smart City FC, confronted the center referee after the match. Reports indicate he harassed the official, blocking his exit from the field. As tensions escalated, a known fan punched the referee, causing a serious eye injury that required hospital treatment.

In a detailed review, the Lagos State FA indicated that such behavior harms the integrity of the sport. The FA’s Vice Chairman, Adedotun Coker, emphasized the need for accountability and calm within football culture. Coker stated, "We must protect the beautiful game from violence and intimidation."

Following the incident, the club must furnish the names of the fan and Afeez for potential prosecution. The FA also fined Smart City FC one million naira for the medical costs incurred by the referee and an additional five million naira for failing to control fan behavior.

Smart City FC’s ban prevents participation in all Lagos State Football Association-sanctioned events for the next two years. However, the FA noted that the club has the right to appeal the decision.

While this incident paints a troubling picture for football in Lagos, it highlights a crucial need for smart interventions in sporting events. Implementing crowd management technologies and enhanced security measures can help prevent violence and ensure a safer environment for players and officials alike. By embracing urban innovation, cities can foster sportsmanship and community spirit, essential for the growth of soccer in Nigeria.

The Lagos State FA plans to inform law enforcement about the threats made against its officials. Through these actions, the association demonstrates a commitment to preserving the safety and integrity of football in the region.
