    Top Highlights

    1. AI is made to seem unknowable, encouraging people to trust its creators instead of demanding transparency and oversight.
    2. The AI economy may be in a bubble, with worrying parallels to the housing crisis—and the speaker says they don’t trust industry leaders like Sam Altman.
    3. New York is proposing a broad school AI moratorium, banning generative AI for students from 2K through eighth grade.
    4. The goal is to protect learning: let students try, fail, and grow without becoming test subjects for tech companies’ profits.

    Make the Costs Visible

Zohran Mamdani argues that the public needs clear information about AI, including how much energy it uses. He says technology companies can present AI as too complex to question. That framing, he warns, asks people to trust the firms that build it.

Data centers make the issue concrete. They power AI services, but the public needs reliable information about their energy demands and who bears the costs. Without that detail, communities cannot weigh the benefits against the burden.

    Adoption Needs Guardrails

Mamdani also sees warning signs of a possible AI bubble. He compares the industry’s investment climate with the housing bubble, though that comparison does not prove a crash will come. His concern is that rapid adoption and strong profit incentives could outpace public oversight.

Still, AI can support useful work. Schools and businesses may find ways to use it well. The challenge is to test those uses openly and set rules before adoption races ahead.

    Give Students Room to Learn

In New York, Mamdani has backed a proposal to bar generative AI use by students from 2K through eighth grade. He says young students need space to try, fail and learn without becoming test subjects for technology companies.

That debate deserves care. AI tools may help some students, but schools should judge them on clear evidence, not sales pitches. As Mamdani argues, educators should shape classroom technology — not let companies set the terms.
