    Researchers at UC San Francisco have achieved a groundbreaking advancement. They enabled a paralyzed man to control a robotic arm using only his thoughts. This milestone demonstrates the potential of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) in enhancing mobility for individuals with paralysis.

    The participant, who suffered paralysis from a stroke, used a device that relayed signals from his brain to a computer. Remarkably, he could grasp, move, and drop objects solely by imagining that he was performing the actions. This achievement marks a significant improvement in BCI technology. Previous devices typically functioned for just a day or two, but this one lasted an impressive seven months without adjustments.

    The brain-computer interface utilized an AI model. This model adapted to minor changes in the participant’s brain patterns as he imagined different movements. Neurologist Karunesh Ganguly emphasized the significance of this innovation. "This blending of learning between humans and AI is the next phase for these brain-computer interfaces," he said. Such advancements hold promise for providing more natural and effective control of robotic limbs.

    The study, which appeared on March 6 in Cell, received funding from the National Institutes of Health. Researchers found that brain activity patterns shifted daily as the participant repeated specific imagined movements. Ganguly and researcher Nikhilesh Natraj, PhD, discovered the need for AI to account for these variations. They implanted tiny sensors on the participant’s brain to track his activity when he envisioned movements.

    Over two weeks, the participant practiced imagining movements such as wiggling his fingers and moving his hands. Initially, the robotic arm’s movements were not precise. Therefore, the team introduced a virtual robot arm, which provided feedback on his accuracy. With practice, he learned to control the virtual arm effectively.

    Once he transitioned to the real robotic arm, he quickly applied his skills. He successfully picked up blocks, moved them, and even opened a cabinet to retrieve a cup. Significant improvements followed, and after a brief "tune-up" to adjust to changes in brain signal patterns, he continued to control the arm seamlessly.

    Ganguly plans to refine the AI models further. He aims to enhance the robotic arm’s speed and fluidity, with future tests set in home environments. This advancement could revolutionize daily living for individuals with paralysis, allowing them to perform tasks like feeding themselves or drinking water.

    Ganguly expressed optimism about the future of this technology. "I’m very confident that we’ve learned how to build the system now, and that we can make this work," he stated. This progress signals a new era of assistance for those with mobility challenges, blending the power of AI with the potential of human thought.
