    Top Highlights

    1. The Skylight Buddy helps kids track routines using appealing visuals and sounds.
    2. Priced at $139.99, it requires extra fees for advanced features.
    3. Kids engage more effectively with a dedicated device compared to traditional methods.
    4. Limited app flexibility hinders customization of routines, affecting usability.

The Power of a Cheap Tablet

Never underestimate the impact of a simple tablet on a young child. The Skylight Buddy, priced at $139.99 with an optional subscription, exemplifies this phenomenon. Designed specifically for children ages four to ten, the Buddy tackles one pressing issue: helping kids track routines and chores. Despite its limited features, the Buddy brings surprisingly effective results.

Setting up the Buddy requires adult assistance through the Skylight app. Users create a unique profile for their child. Families with multiple children might find the one-kid-per-device policy limiting, but for single-child households, this design works well. The app allows parents to establish daily tasks or routines, displaying them as large cards with emoji labels. This design cleverly caters to children who are not yet reading proficiently.

Basic functionality comes without any subscriptions. Parents can use it as a night light or alarm. However, accessing more advanced features requires the $39-per-year “Buddy Plus” subscription. These extras include reminders and rewards for completed tasks, as well as visual timers. Despite my initial skepticism regarding whether my child would engage with a checklist on a screen, his enthusiasm for checking off tasks was unexpected. Tasks like “eat breakfast” and “brush teeth” took on new life, leading to an onscreen celebration when completed. The emoji confetti transforms mundane tasks into engaging events that my child eagerly anticipates.

    Design and Functionality

The Buddy’s kid-centric design enhances its appeal. Its eye-level display, coupled with a colorful silicone case, makes it an inviting presence in any home. Yet, the app could benefit from increased flexibility. For instance, once a task is assigned, moving it to another day proves cumbersome. Situations often arise where routines need adjustment, such as skipping a bath night.

Although some valuable features require a subscription, using the basic settings has proven fruitful. My attempts at a more traditional reward system involved a pizza chart, which lacked sustainability. The hands-off nature of the Buddy offers a refreshing alternative. Even without a built-in reward system, the device fosters independence and structure for my child.

While the Buddy excels at performing its core function, it has room for improvement. Features like task reordering would enhance usability. Nevertheless, the Skylight Buddy stands as a useful tool for families seeking to streamline chores and routines. It offers practicality and engagement for young children without requiring constant parental oversight. As families navigate the complexities of modern parenting, innovative tools like the Skylight Buddy can significantly alleviate stress, proving that even a simple tablet can make a meaningful impact.
