Prime Video’s “Spider-Noir” premiered on May 27, injecting fresh energy into the superhero genre. With an impressive 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the show stars Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, a Depression-era version of Spider-Man. With a cast featuring the likes of Brendan Gleeson, the series promises old-fashioned fun pitting iconic villains against a unique web-slinger. However, one of the show’s standout features is its dual viewing experience: viewers can choose between True-Hue Full Color and Authentic Black & White.

    Two Distinct Visual Experiences

The visual strategy behind “Spider-Noir” is a groundbreaking approach to storytelling. Cinematographers Darran Tiernan and Peter Deming aimed to create two distinct versions of the same narrative. Initially conceived as a black-and-white project, the idea for a color version arose early in production. “It was Nic and Oren who suggested, ‘Why not have both?'” Tiernan reveals. They faced the challenge of making both formats coexist harmoniously. Testing and discussions guided their efforts, syncing camera settings and lighting for each version.

“When we shot in color first, I felt different emotional responses in the same scene when we switched to black and white,” Tiernan notes. Deming further emphasizes the marketing aspect: black-and-white often deters audiences. “Cage wanted to reach a broader viewership,” he explains. The color version appeals to those less inclined toward monochrome visuals, effectively creating an experience suitable for both adults and young viewers. This innovative design lets “Spider-Noir” resonate with fans accustomed to the visual dynamism of comic books.

Influences from Film Noir and Comic Books

The cinematic aesthetics of “Spider-Noir” draw from a rich history of influences. Tiernan cites classic film noir for its innovative storytelling methods. “Films like ‘The Killing’ and ‘Touch of Evil’ provide great examples of using angles and compositions for drama,” he states. The crew sought to reflect the visual language of comic panels while integrating noir-inspired elements. Deming mentions how film noir has its roots in comic book style, creating a cyclical relationship between the two.

This interplay of genres allows both the black-and-white and color versions to thrive. The black-and-white aesthetic channels a gritty, classic noir feel, while the color version offers a vibrant comic book atmosphere. “Spider-Noir” presents a unique opportunity for filmmakers to blend these styles, opening doors for future projects to explore similar dualities. The show’s innovative approach not only energizes the superhero narrative but also highlights the artistic potential of combining different visual experiences.
