Ripple has made a groundbreaking move in the cryptocurrency world by acquiring prime brokerage giant Hidden Road for $1.25 billion. This acquisition marks a significant transformation, not just for Ripple but also for the future of XRP and its underlying technology, the XRP Ledger (XRPL).
For years, Ripple concentrated on retail remittances and enterprise payments. However, the company has now shifted its focus to the robust opportunities in institutional treasury flows and liquidity management. Hidden Road stands out in the industry; it clears over $3 trillion annually and services more than 300 major financial entities such as hedge funds and trading firms. By taking control of this platform, Ripple has effectively opened a direct channel for institutional investments in XRP.
Analyst WrathofKahneman noted that this move elevates Ripple’s strategy: “Ripple is no longer just building around traditional financial infrastructure; they bought it.” The integration of XRP and its stablecoin, RLUSD, into institutional trading processes will accelerate XRP’s acceptance in mainstream finance.
Importantly, Ripple’s CEO, Brad Garlinghouse, confirmed that Hidden Road will utilize the XRPL for post-trade settlements. This capability allows institutions to finalize trades almost instantly, bypassing the delays associated with conventional banking systems. Ripple aims to position XRP as a vital connector between cryptocurrency and traditional finance.
Kahneman also emphasized the potential “flywheel effect” that may arise. Increased liquidity on the XRPL could enhance XRP’s utility, driving further adoption. He further clarified that RLUSD, while stable and regulated, will complement XRP rather than replace it, as liquidity movement will still require XRP’s unique attributes.
Despite the encouraging developments, XRP’s price recently dipped 3% to $1.80. Over the past week, it has fallen 13%, underperforming compared to a wider crypto market decline of about 8%. Still, experts remain optimistic. Standard Chartered forecasts that XRP could surge to $5.50 by year-end, with a potential rise to $12.50 by 2028.
