Norena pursued this dream through education, earning a degree in computer engineering at the University of Central Florida. His proximity to the Space Coast provided him with the unique opportunity to witness space shuttle launches firsthand. After completing his studies, he joined United Space Alliance, a NASA contractor, before stepping into a civil servant role at NASA Kennedy Space Center in 2008.
Starting as an electrical engineer in the Space Shuttle Program, Norena became a flight termination engineer in the firing room for 17 shuttle missions. His responsibilities included ensuring mission safety during launches. Each mission played a vital role in assembling the International Space Station and servicing the Hubble Space Telescope. These foundational experiences prepared him for his current role as the resident management officer for NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) Program.
