    Essential Insights

    1. Recent research challenges the belief that gorillas lack self-awareness compared to chimpanzees, suggesting they possess similar levels of self-awareness despite typically failing the mirror test.
    2. A new body awareness test revealed that both gorillas and chimpanzees recognize when their bodies obstruct access, indicating a basic form of self-awareness that develops in humans around 1.5 years old.
    3. The study encourages scientists to expand their methods of testing self-awareness, revealing that species perceived as &quot, less intelligent&quot, might have richer inner lives than previously thought.
    4. Findings suggest self-awareness in apes may exist on a spectrum, with different species displaying various forms of awareness, necessitating a reevaluation of how we define and measure this complex trait in animals.

    Rethinking Self-Awareness in Gorillas

For years, scientists believed gorillas lacked self-awareness compared to chimpanzees. This assumption stemmed largely from the mirror test, a common method used to assess self-awareness. In this test, animals receive a mark they can only see using a mirror. If they recognize the mark and attempt to remove it, they show self-awareness. However, gorillas typically do not perform well on this test. Researchers recently challenged this notion, suggesting gorillas might possess self-awareness similar to chimps.

A team from Utrecht University, along with other institutions, conducted a study at Burgers’ Zoo in Arnhem. They designed a new test to measure body awareness in gorillas and chimpanzees. In this test, both species had to open a food box placed on a pole, requiring them to recognize their own bodies as obstacles. Remarkably, both gorillas and chimpanzees demonstrated this awareness equally well. This evidence suggests that gorillas may be more self-aware than previously thought.

    Implications for Understanding Animal Cognition

These findings prompt scientists to rethink how they evaluate self-awareness in animals. The traditional mirror test may not apply to all species, as some might not rely heavily on vision. Researchers argue for using varied methods to gain deeper insights into animals’ inner lives. Understanding gorillas’ body awareness enhances knowledge about their cognitive abilities and behaviors. It may also shed light on how self-awareness evolved across different great ape species.

Some experts propose that self-awareness exists on a spectrum. While chimpanzees excel at visual recognition, gorillas might depend on spatial awareness. This approach may lead to a richer understanding of how animals perceive themselves and their surroundings. As researchers continue to explore these differences, they may uncover essential insights about the evolution of self-awareness in humans and great apes alike.
