    Quick Takeaways

    1. Z.ai outperforms MiniMax with higher revenue and strong AI models.
    2. Z.ai’s revenue surged nearly 400%, while MiniMax grew 283%.
    3. Z.ai’s ARR is twice that of MiniMax, at US$1.6 billion versus US$800 million.
    4. MiniMax’s ARR estimate is based on a single week’s data, raising doubts.

Different Trails for Z.ai and MiniMax After Hong Kong IPOs

Months after launching in Hong Kong, Z.ai and MiniMax seem to be heading down very different financial paths. Both companies aimed to lead China’s AI boom. They shared a similar goal: to capture a surge in demand for artificial intelligence both locally and internationally. However, recent earnings reports reveal a clear divide. Z.ai shows strong growth, while MiniMax’s outlook appears more uncertain. These differences raise questions about how practical and promising each company’s AI technology really is.

Z.ai’s recent performance impresses many observers. The company achieved a nearly 400% increase in revenue in the first half of the year, reaching 953.9 million yuan (about US$142 million). Its top-model performance also exceeds expectations. Because of this, analysts see Z.ai as a company on the rise, with solid prospects for the future. On the other hand, MiniMax’s revenue grew by 283% to US$116.6 million. While still impressive, this growth is relatively slower. More importantly, the company’s forecast for recurring revenue is less convincing. The reported annual recurring revenue (ARR) is half of Z.ai’s, at US$800 million versus US$1.6 billion. Some critics point out that MiniMax’s ARR depends on a single week’s data multiplied by 52 weeks. This method can be misleading, as it might not accurately reflect continuous growth. Overall, Z.ai appears to be gaining momentum, while MiniMax’s progress raises questions about its long-term stability.

These contrasting results suggest different strategies and levels of success for each company. Z.ai’s focus on delivering leading AI models and its higher revenue growth make it look like a practical choice for investors. Meanwhile, MiniMax’s slower growth and questionable revenue calculations make it more difficult to predict its future. Ultimately, understanding these differences helps us see how challenging it is for new AI companies to succeed. It also highlights the importance of solid, verifiable data when evaluating their progress. As AI continues to evolve, watching how these companies develop will show whether their ambitions can turn into lasting achievements.
