PUDUCHERRY’S SMART CITY BUS TERMINUS OPENS
Puducherry celebrated the inauguration of the newly renovated Smart City Bus Terminus on Friday. Lt Governor K. Kailashnathan led the ceremony, joined by Chief Minister N Rangasamy and Speaker R Selvam, among other dignitaries. The terminus, a key part of the Smart City initiative, represents a significant investment of Rs 229.5 crore aimed at enhancing local transportation facilities. It features 30 shops, although their allotment remains pending due to an ongoing High Court appeal.
Despite this milestone, confusion surrounding the terminus’s official name has arisen. While the government plaque labels it as the Smart City Bus Terminus, the entrance arch still displays the older name, Rajiv Gandhi Bus Terminus. This inconsistency has left residents puzzled about the facility’s official designation. Moreover, some local politicians have voiced their preferences for renaming it after prominent figures like Atal Bihari Vajpayee or Narendra Modi, raising questions about the future.
A NEW ERA FOR COMMUTERS
The launch brings an essential update to public transport in Puducherry. As of May 3, all route buses will shift operations from the temporary stand at AFT Ground to the new terminus. Municipal Commissioner M Kandasamy confirmed this transition, ensuring smooth travel for residents. Additionally, until the High Court makes a decision regarding shop allotments, a few stalls operated by the Puducherry Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) will provide food and water to travelers.
This development aims to improve the quality of life for residents by integrating smart technologies with everyday facilities. As the city advances in its Smart City journey, residents can look forward to enhanced services and conveniences at the terminus. Community feedback will be vital as the city moves forward amidst these changes and discussions surrounding the terminus’s name.
