A celebratory launch meets an unsettling early report

Apple’s iPhone Duo began reaching customers Oct. 23, bringing the company’s highly anticipated foldable phone to market. The launch should mark an exciting moment for buyers eager to try a new design. Instead, a small number of early owners have reported cracks in the phone’s inner screen, near its hinge and crease.

One owner said the screen broke after about six hours of use and fewer than 20 unfolds. The owner described feeling something beneath the screen near the hinge, then hearing a crack as the phone opened. Apple replaced the device at a store that day. Still, the buyer had to begin the ownership experience with a second phone.

That account has drawn attention because the iPhone Duo costs about $2,000. At that price, customers expect a premium experience from the first day. A quick replacement offers some reassurance, but it does not erase the frustration of a new screen breaking so soon.

Similar damage raises questions, not conclusions

Other early reports from China and Australia describe damage in a similar spot along the crease. That pattern deserves attention. If multiple phones show damage in nearly the same area, buyers may reasonably wonder whether a hinge or screen issue played a role.

However, reports from a few owners cannot establish a wider defect. The cause remains unclear, and the number of affected devices remains unknown. A faulty batch could explain the incidents. So could other factors, though the available accounts do not prove any particular cause.

The early reports also contrast with public fold tests. Reviewers and video creators have repeatedly opened and closed the phone thousands of times. Those tests showed wear on the screen and hinge, but not cracks. That does not rule out problems in everyday use. It does suggest that the reported failures do not yet tell the whole story.

The foldable promise still needs to prove its value

The iPhone Duo offers a different kind of phone experience: owners can fold it shut and open a larger inner display when they want more screen space. That flexibility could make reading, watching video and multitasking feel more convenient. For longtime iPhone users, the design also brings a major change to a familiar product line.

Yet a bold new form has to deliver more than novelty. Buyers need a screen and hinge they can trust through routine use. They also need clear support if a device fails. Apple’s immediate replacement for one owner provides a positive example of customer service, even as the reported crack raises a serious question about durability.

More customers will put the iPhone Duo through ordinary days in the coming weeks. Their experiences should help clarify whether these cases reflect isolated failures or a broader concern. For now, the reports warrant attention, but they do not prove a design flaw. The phone’s promise remains compelling; its long-term value will depend on how well its foldable screen holds up.
