    Kolmogorov–Arnold Networks: Build & Visualize

    Essential Insights

    1. KANs learn functions, not just weights: Each connection applies a trainable one-variable function, making the network’s learned transformations inspectable.

    2. The function family matters: Quadratics and B-splines can fit data, but Chebyshev polynomials make it easier to collapse a trained network into an explicit equation.

    3. Simple tests worked remarkably well: The Chebyshev model recovered a synthetic quadratic and the motion equation (s=2x+1.5x^2) almost exactly.

    4. Good predictions aren’t proof of a discovered law: Lorenz-equation recovery improved with better-designed data and repeated runs, but results varied—showing that equation recovery needs more than low prediction error.

    From Weights to Visible Functions

Kolmogorov-Arnold networks, or KANs, replace ordinary neural network weights with learnable functions along the connections between nodes. Each node adds the functions it receives. That small design shift creates a useful new view: instead of inspecting a single weight, you can plot what each connection learned.

A simple prototype can start with quadratic functions, then move to more flexible options. On synthetic data, a one-node KAN with quadratic edges approximated a target equation closely. It also turned into a compact polynomial that people could inspect directly. Visualization helps reveal what the model learned, not just whether its predictions look accurate.

Splines, Polynomials and a Harder Test

B-splines let each edge learn different shapes across regions of its input range. They offer flexibility, but that flexibility can create a complicated expression. A spline-based model may match a simple target well without recovering that target’s exact formula.

Chebyshev polynomials offer another route. They create global polynomial functions that can be expanded into explicit equations. In tests, a Chebyshev KAN recovered a simple motion equation closely. It also captured some Lorenz-system coefficients when the experiment used carefully sampled data and a deeper network. However, a single-layer model struggled with the Lorenz equations’ interactions between variables. More layers can represent those interactions, but they also make training harder.

    What Visualization Can—and Can’t—Tell Us

These experiments point to real promise. KANs can help researchers inspect learned relationships and turn some models into equations. Yet a low prediction error does not prove that a network found the true law. Correlated or limited data can support several different equations that make similar predictions.

KANs also carry a practical cost: learnable functions can demand more computation than simple weights. Their usefulness depends on the task, the chosen function family and the quality of the data. So, treat visualization as a way to investigate a model—not as proof that its explanation is correct.
