Lucid Air Drivers Gain Tesla Supercharger Access—But There’s a Twist!

    Summary Points

    1. Access to Tesla Superchargers: Starting July 31, Lucid Air sedan owners can charge at thousands of Tesla Supercharger stations in North America, thanks to a two-year agreement.

    2. Limited Charging Speed: Lucid Air can charge at only 50 kW using Tesla’s network, significantly slower than the 250 kW peak available at Superchargers, due to a voltage mismatch.

    3. Cost and Adaptation: Owners need a $220 approved adapter to access Tesla’s fast chargers, with Lucid’s charging system modified to enable this capability.

    4. Future Prospects: The upcoming Lucid Gravity SUV will include a built-in North America Charging Standard (NACS) charging port, aligning with industry trends as other automakers adopt Tesla’s charging technology.

Access to Tesla Superchargers: A New Opportunity

Starting July 31, Lucid Air owners can charge at Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network across North America. This development follows nearly two years of negotiations between the two automakers. However, there’s an important detail: charging speeds for Lucid Air vehicles will not match the speeds enjoyed by Tesla drivers. Lucid Air will charge at a maximum rate of 50 kW, while Tesla’s V3 Superchargers can provide up to 250 kW. This discrepancy arises from technical differences between the vehicles’ charging systems. Lucid’s 924-volt architecture does not align with Tesla’s 400-volt Supercharger technology.

To access these chargers, Lucid owners must purchase a $220 adapter. This adapter enables the luxury sedans to utilize Tesla’s charging stations, offering an alternative for both road trips and everyday needs. While the slower charging rate may frustrate some drivers, it still enhances accessibility to Tesla’s vast network. Lucid aims to provide owners with more options, particularly in regions rich with Superchargers.

The Shift Toward Universal Charging Standards

The agreement represents a significant shift in the electric vehicle landscape. As more automakers like Ford, GM, and others adopt Tesla’s North America Charging Standard (NACS), the trend suggests a move toward greater interoperability among EVs. Lucid, although late to the party, is joining this movement. Its forthcoming Gravity SUV will feature the NACS, making it easier for drivers to find charging solutions in the future.

Ultimately, mainstream adoption of electric vehicles hinges on reliable and accessible charging infrastructures. By collaborating with Tesla, Lucid contributes to a more interconnected EV ecosystem. This collaboration benefits not only individual drivers but also the broader ambition of reducing carbon emissions and fostering sustainable transportation. As more brands integrate NACS, they will further solidify the foundation necessary for the future of electric mobility.
