NASA recently confirmed its newest SIMPLEx mission, Lunar Trailblazer, a small satellite aimed at studying the Moon’s surface. This mission promises to produce high-resolution maps that will help locate ice or water trapped in lunar rock. With the Artemis program set to establish a sustainable presence on the Moon by the end of the decade, Lunar Trailblazer will play a crucial role in future exploration efforts.
“We’re excited to help answer big planetary science questions with a small satellite,” stated the mission’s principal investigator. This emphasis on water is important because it supports both robotic and human missions to the Moon and beyond. Lunar Trailblazer will explore the Moon’s permanently shadowed regions, detecting ice signatures in reflected light. This capability is vital for identifying micro-cold traps that span less than a football field.
