    1. Intervention Reality Check: The author’s spouse highlights a serious issue with the author’s dwindling attention span, exacerbated by excessive screen time and constant notifications.

    2. Brick App Experiment: The author attempts to use the Brick app, which blocks distractions but finds it challenging to stay compliant, ultimately highlighting their struggle with staying present.

    3. Reclaiming Focus: Through trial and error with Brick, the author realizes that intentionality, like limiting phone usage to specific situations (e.g., watching TV), can help regain focus.

    4. Small Wins over Perfection: The journey isn’t about achieving total disconnection but making small tweaks that gradually improve attention and enjoyment in daily activities, emphasizing the importance of manageable changes.

    Facing the Digital Disconnect

“We need to talk.” We all dread those words, especially when they come from loved ones. As I sank deeper into my couch, wrapped in a grubby blanket, my spouse pointed out a glaring issue: my attention span had vanished. I may have felt defensive, but the truth was hard to ignore. I had been doomscrolling while lifelessly glued to the TV. The root problem was glaring—my phone had hijacked my focus.

The introduction of a “Brick” app sparked curiosity. This app locks my phone, limiting distractions. A physical key allows temporary access, but losing that key leads to reinstating boundaries that I thought would help. However, I struggled with this concept. It turned out that disengaging from my devices required much more than just a technical solution. My fear of missing critical updates kept me tied to my phone, complicating my desire for genuine connections.

    The Journey Toward Intentionality

My attempt to limit distractions through the Brick app became a humbling experience. I realized I had to embrace discomfort, the core of being present. Initially, I overloaded myself with modes for work, leisure, and fitness. The complexity quickly became overwhelming. Yet, amidst this confusion, one insight resonated: simplicity holds power. By focusing solely on watching TV, I reclaimed moments that would have previously slipped away in a haze of notifications.

While my attention span isn’t completely restored, I’m already noticing small victories. I laughed more during shows and regained momentum in reading. This journey reminded me that not every solution fits each scenario. Sometimes, small adjustments yield significant results. As I continue to navigate the balance between connection and disconnection, I appreciate the gentle nudges toward mindfulness. Each tweak in my approach brings a step closer to my long-abandoned joy of simply being present.
