Ryan Haines / Android Authority TL;DR

    1. OnePlus has temporarily paused downgrades from firmware version 16.0.2.50x to prevent bricked devices and enhance security.
    2. The introduction of Anti-Rollback Protection (ARB) means attempting to downgrade or install custom ROMs could brick devices, impacting models like the OnePlus 13, 13T, 15, and Ace 5 series.
    3. OnePlus plans to restore downgrade capability in an upcoming software update; users with bricked devices must contact customer support for assistance.
    4. While some claims suggest the downgrade pause addresses a potential device wipe vulnerability, OnePlus has neither confirmed nor denied these allegations.

OnePlus Addresses Phone Bricking Issues During Downgrades

OnePlus has recently faced backlash from users who experienced bricked devices while attempting to downgrade their firmware. Last week, the company confirmed it had paused downgrades from the 16.0.2.50x versions due to security protocols.

The implementation of Anti-Rollback Protection (ARB) played a crucial role in this situation. This hardware-level security feature prevents users from downgrading their software or installing custom ROMs. As a result, attempting such actions can render devices unusable.

Fortunately, the company’s statement assures users this measure is temporary. OnePlus plans to reinstate the ability to downgrade in the upcoming software update. In the meantime, customers needing assistance can contact OnePlus customer support.

Affected models include the OnePlus 13, 13T, 15, and the China-only Ace 5 series. While initial reports indicated the issue mainly impacted devices running ColorOS, OnePlus clarified that the risks also apply to those using OxygenOS.

This pause in downgrade capability sparks discussions around device security. Some reports suggest it stems from concerns over vulnerabilities that could enable unauthorized wiping of stolen devices. Although OnePlus has not confirmed this claim, the focus on enhanced security remains a positive step.

For users passionate about custom ROMs or simply wishing to revert to older software, relief is on the horizon. However, those left with bricked devices must reach out to OnePlus for potential solutions. Overall, while this situation might frustrate some, the commitment to security remains a noteworthy priority for the company.
